East coast heading for weekend downpour, risk of flooding

Wetter weather is in store for residents of Australia’s east coast, with hundreds of millimeters of rain expected to fall over parts of the state over the weekend.

Millions of people were in for a rude weather shock earlier this week as warm and sunny conditions gave way to persistent rain and plummeting temperatures.

The sudden change was triggered by a coastal depression that has lingered off the NSW coast for days.

It brought a deluge to some areas of the central coast. Nord’s Wharf Oval in the Hunter Valley recorded 93mm in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday.

To the west, Cooranbong in Lake Macquarie recorded its wettest day in 13 years when 52.4mm fell during the same period.

Rain will continue today before intensifying tomorrow and into the weekend as an upper level low pressure system approaches northern NSW.

Between Saturday and next Tuesday, 60mm to 120mm of rain is expected to fall on the central and north coasts of NSW, including Sydney. But some parts will register 200mm, forecasters say.

The deluge will then focus on eastern New South Wales and south-east Queensland on Sunday and Monday, with the heaviest falls along the central and northern New South Wales coast on Sunday.

Forecasters are warning of potential flood risks for some parts as heavily waterlogged soil is irrigated by further heavy rains.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a dangerous surf warning for the Sydney, Macquarie, Hunter and Illawarra coasts from tomorrow until the weekend.
